ST. HENRY — Roughriders and Redskins are usually interesting.

The St. Marys boys basketball team had to battle for a while before pulling away for a 57-42 win over St. Henry on Saturday night.

The Roughriders made it 12 straight wins as they raised their season record to 16-5.

Coach Dan Hegemier noted that this was the team’s first road game since facing Kenton on Jan. 27.

“We came out flat, and give St. Henry credit (for their effort),” Hegemier said. He noted that it was a physical contest and the Riders will take the win and move on.

After scoring runs by each side in the first quarter, the second was a back and forth affair with the Riders up by one at the break.

St. Marys then broke things open in the third, holding the Redskins to three points, and stayed ahead the rest of the way.

Austin Parks had a gamehigh 25 points and pulled down nine defensive rebounds.

Brayden Sullivan scored 11 and Evan Angstmann had nine.

For St. Henry, now 10-11 on the year, Evan Bowers led with 17 points.

Parks opened the scoring for the game, but the Redskins answered with a 9-0 run.

They got a bucket by John Hartings, then a hook shot and a three-pointer by Bowers, followed by a jumper from Logan Link.

The Roughriders called time with 5:17 to go to settle things down.

Sullivan hit a threepointer, then Cobain Owens and Parks scored to tie it.

A reverse layup by Angstmann was equaled by a putback from Bowers with three minutes left.

The only further scoring came on a pass from Jace Turner to Parks as the Riders led 13-11.

Bowers started off the second quarter with a 3-pointer. That was answered by one from Angstmann.

St. Henry’s Luke Beyke got his own rebound and scored, with Parks hitting for the Riders, then Caden Bergman hitting a floater with 4:05 to go to square it at 18.

A three-point play by Turner and a score by Parks made it a five-point game.

St. Henry made a steal, and broke down the court with Devin Delzeith scor

ing.

After a three-pointer by Owens with just under two minutes left in the half, Beyke assisted on one score then hit a three with just a couple seconds left to shrink the gap to one, 26-25.

Having discussed matters at the break, Sullivan hit from deep to start the third period.

St. Henry’s Beyke was called for a charge, then hit with a technical for his reaction. Turner made both free throws for St. Marys.

The Riders added scores by Parks and Sullivan, pushing the lead up to 10 points.

The Redskins were held scoreless until the 2:20 mark when Bowers hit a three-pointer.

That would be their only score of the frame, however.

The Riders added eight more points over the last couple of minutes, finishing with a score by Jaden Lotz that made it 43-28.

Parks led the way in the fourth, scoring all but three of the team’s 14 in the period. Sullivan had the other score on a long-range shot early in the quarter.

St. Henry was able to score the same number of points, but could not close the gap much.
