State swim and dive meet to include locals

BOWLING GREEN — The Division II district swim and dive meets were held last week, with a group of athletes from area schools qualifying for the state meet in Canton.

Luke Hertenstei­n of St. Marys will take part in the 1-meter diving competitio­n. That will be held today starting at 9 a.m.

The top 14 divers qualified. Hertenstei­n, a sophomore, finished in 10th place with 243.60 points.

The Roughrider­s’ team of Reese Triplett, Marcus McClain, Griffin Luebke and Bradey Triplett finished sixth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.90. Three of the group are juniors, with Bradey Triplett a freshman.

In the 200 individual medley, sophomore Andy Jiang of New Bremen won the race in a time of 1:54.71. Reese Triplett finished eighth (2:02.08) and also qualified for state.

McClain finished 11th in the 100 breaststro­ke (1:01.96) and will swim in that event at Canton.

Besides the 200 IM, Jiang finished second in the 100 butterfly to earn a spot at state. He had a time of 51.72 seconds.

Three area girls performed well enough to be part of the state meet field.

Senior Cameo Cedarleaf of Minster finished fifth in the 100 freestyle (55.19).

Annie Jiang of New Bremen, also a senior, took third place in the 200 free (1:57.99).

Marion Local will be represente­d by senior Kyle Niekamp. She took third place in the 200 individual medley (2:13.78) and was fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.08).

In the team standings, Port Clinton won the girls crown and Lexington was the boys champion.

Swimmers will compete on Thursday in the preliminar­ies. Finals will be held on Friday. Competitio­n begins at 5 p.m. each day.
