50 Years Ago This Week
Fifty years ago this week in 1973, Dave Wright, a member of St. Marys’ undefeated 1972 football squad, signed his letter-ofintent to further his education and football playing career at the University of Toledo. Wright served as co-captain for the Roughriders in the fall of 1972 and earned All-Western Buckeye League honors from his halfback position. While at St. Marys, he was a two-year starter for the Blue and Gold, and averaged 5.2 yards per carry on 226 carries and a career mark of 1195 yards. He also kicked off for an average of 49.1 yards per kick.
25 Years Ago This Week – 1998
Twenty-five years ago this week in 1998, the St. Marys girls’ basketball team opened up their district tournament play with a 53-33 victory over the Bryan Bears. The Roughriders charged out in front 17-4 after one quarter of play and enjoyed an 11-point advantage at the halftime break. St. Marys picked up the second half ferociously by out-scoring the Bears 21-7 and although Bryan held a 12-7 edge in the final period, it wasn’t enough, as St. Marys improved to 11-12 on the season and advanced to the District Final against Wauseon.
10 Years Ago This Week – 2013
Ten years ago this week in 2013, the New Bremen boys’ basketball team had their season come to a close in the district semifinals with a 57-45 setback to the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays. The Cardinals trailed by three points at the end of the first period and 23-19 at the intermission. The Crimson and Gold out-scored the Blue Jays 16-13 in the third period, but St. John’s blew things open in the final stanza to record the 12-point victory. Luke Schwieterman led New Bremen with 14 points in the loss, while Parker Manger added ten points, as New Bremen closed the season with an overall record of 18-6.
