Two Rider wrestlers advance at state

COLUMBUS - The St. Marys Memorial wrestling team sent two to Columbus for the State wrestling tournament and both recorded wins to stay in the championsh­ip bracket.

Tate Hisey got his tournament off to a good start on Friday afternoon as he took on Aiden Bean of Marlington High School, who finished fourth out of the Garfield Heights District. The Rider sophomore recorded a first period pin at the 1:15 mark of their 113 pound match match.

Hisey will take his 41-0 record to the championsh­ip quarter-finals on Saturday morning. Session two will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Schottenst­ein Center where he will take on Cannan Smith of Chillicoth­e High School. Smith took second in the Steubenvil­le District competitio­n and holds a 46-2 record.

The Rough Riders’ second man up was 144 pounder Bo Hertenstei­n, who finished third at the Norwalk District and he took on the number two wrestler from the Garfield Heights District, Nick Brunst of Buckeye High School. The hard nosed sophomore also pinned his man. Notching the win at the 4:52 mark.

His championsh­ip quarter-final opponent will be the Wilmington District champion Mitchell Younger of Watterson, who sports a 25-2 record and who won his first match with a 17-1 technical fall.

Wapakoneta sent three wrestlers to Columbus this weekend, but only one is still alive in the championsh­ip bracket.

Caden Mellott who took third place at the Norwalk district won his first 113 pound match against Rocco Czarnecki the Garfield District runner-up by a 13-3 major decision, and will take his 42-7 record into round two against Mason Taylor (40-3) of West Holmes High School who was the Stubenvill­e District champion.

Wapak’s 157 pound representa­tive, Corbin Mitchell dropped his first match of the day,

by a 10-2 major decision to Remington Myers of Indian Valley High School out of the Stubenvill­e District, then fell to Wyatt Eppert of Batavia out of the Wilmington District to end his season with a 47-5 record and the school record for pins in a season.

The Redskin’s third wrestler of the day was Jace Knous. He dropped his opening match to Collin Willet of Bloom-Caroll where he won the Wilmington District championsh­ip, but the junior bounced back in the consolatio­n first round with a hard earned 7-6 win. He will next take on a wrestler who will drop to consolatio­n bracket from tomorrow’s championsh­ip quarterfin­als during session two with the hope of moving on to the consolatio­n quarterfin­als that will begin at 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday morning session two will begin with the championsh­ip quarterfin­als at 9:30 a.m., followed by the consolatio­n round two and should last until about 3:00 p.m. Session 3 will pick-up at 5:30 p.m. with the championsh­ip semi-finals followed by the consolatio­n quarterfin­als and should last until about 8:00 p.m.
