Cubs place Suzuki on 10-day IL

The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Seiya Suzuki on the 10-day injured list Monday due to a right oblique strain.

The Cubs recalled outfielder Alexander Canario from Triple-A Iowa in a correspond­ing move.

To start his third season in MLB after moving over from Japan, Suzuki leads the Cubs with 18 hits and 13 RBIs through 15 games, with three home runs and a .305 batting average.

The 29-year-old, who played Sunday against the Seattle Mariners and went 2-for-4, has batted .277 with 37 homers and 133 RBIs over 264 career games since joining the Cubs in 2022.

Canario, 23, made his major league debut last season and got into six games for the Cubs. He went 5-for-17 (.294) with six RBIs, one home run, one triple and one double. Canario has batted .269 so far this season at Iowa.

Yankees voice Sterling has called final game

The New York Yankees announced the retirement of their long-time playby-play radio voice, John Sterling, effective immediatel­y.

The Athletic reported that Yankees officials and WFAN employees believe Sterling decided to retire due to issues concerning his health.

Sterling, 85, has called 5,420 regular-season Yankees games and 211 in the postseason. He will be recognized in a pregame ceremony Saturday and will make an in-game appearance to the WFAN booth during the matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays.

“I am a very blessed human being,” Sterling said in a prepared statement. “I have been able to do what I wanted, broadcasti­ng for 64 years. As a little boy growing up in New York as a Yankees fan, I was able to broadcast the Yankees for 36 years.

“It’s all to my benefit, and I leave very, very happy. I look forward to seeing everyone again on Saturday.”

Sterling, who joined the club during the 1989 season, called 5,060 consecutiv­e games from September 1989 to July 2019.

His final game this season was the Yanks’ 8-3 win over Toronto on April 7.

White Sox reinstate Jimenez from IL

The Chicago White Sox reinstated outfielder Eloy Jimenez from the 10day injured list Monday, while also purchasing the contract of right-hander Nick Nastrini.

In correspond­ing moves, right-hander Justin Anderson and infielder Zach Remillard were optioned to Triple-A Charlotte. To make room on the 40man roster for Nastrini, catcher Max Stassi was transferre­d to the 60-day IL.

Jimenez, 27, played in just three games before he went down with a left adductor strain. A .274 career hitter in 439 games with the White Sox, Jimenez was off to a slow start, hitting .182 (2for-11) with just two singles.

Nastrini, 24, is set to make his major league debut after he was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers just before last season’s trade deadline. Righthande­rs Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly were sent to the Dodgers in that deal.

In two starts at Charlotte this season, Nastrini was 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA. He has a 3.99 ERA in 252 1/3 innings over four minor league seasons.

Anderson, 31, pitched just 2 1/3 innings after he was added to the White Sox’s roster Friday. Remillard, 30, was 1-for-5 in two games this season.

Stassi, 33, has been on the IL since spring training with left hip inflammati­on.

Marlins’ Burger heading to IL

Miami Marlins third baseman Jake Burger landed on the 10-day injured list Monday with a left oblique injury.

Burger, 28, told reporters he felt discomfort following Sunday’s 9-7 loss to the Atlanta Braves.
