Sylvia Doris (Busch) Weller

WIGGINS - Sylvia Doris Weller, 93, died Monday, August 1, 2022, at MeadowView Assisted Living and Memory Care in Greeley, Colo. She lived nearly her entire life about 5 miles south of Wiggins. She was born June 26, 1929, at her maternal grandparen­t's home in Denver to Henry Frederick and Altaha Mildred ( Whitmore) Busch. Her paternal grandparen­ts, John and Christina Busch, homesteade­d south of Wiggins in 1908. Her maternal grandparen­ts, Grant and Anna Whitmore, homestead nearby in 1918, and that is when her parents met and later married. Except for living in Denver for two years during World War II, Sylvia grew up on her parents' ranch. She graduated from Wiggins High School in 1947 and attended Colorado State College of Education in Greeley for two years. She received a teaching certificat­e and taught third and fourth grade and music for three years at Goodrich School.

She married Frederick Calvin Weller on June 11, 1950. He had purchased a farm adjacent to her parents' ranch in 1946. She left teaching to begin a family. After the youngest of her three children began grade school, she was a substitute teacher for 10 years in the Wiggins school district. When the state required substitute teachers to have a bachelor's degree, she was hired as a reading specialist and teacher's aide at

Wiggins Elementar y School, where she worked until retiring in 1984.

Sylvia also helped her husband on the farm and was relieved when her sons were old enough to drive a sugar beet truck, allowing her to step down from that duty. She had extensive flower gardens, sewed clothes for herself and her family, made quilts, taught Sunday school, served as Wiggins PTA president, and was a longtime member of Long Meadow Community Club, where her mother was a charter member. After retiring, she sewed hundreds of dolls and stuffed animals that were donated to fund- raising events and to children's charities. Her husband, Fred, died October 29, 2020, at age 95. Sylvia moved to MeadowView in September 2021.

Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Tackabury of Wiggins; two sons, Doug and his wife, Nancy Arnoldy, of Lawrence, Kan., and

Ken and his wife, Janelle, of Wiggins; two grandchild­ren; two stepgrandc­hildren; three nieces; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by son- in- law Rick Tackabury and her brothers, Philip and Norman Busch.

No ser vice is planned; interment will be in Riverside Cemetery's columbariu­m in Fort Morgan.
