Wiggins girls hoops finishes second at districts

- By Alissa Noe

District basketball tournaments at the Class 1A, 2A and 3A levels provide the chance for small schools all over Colorado to secure their spots for regionals. Only the champions of each smaller district competition earn the guaranteed bids.

The remaining bids will all be filled by the top teams in CHSAA’s Selection and Seeding Index. Luckily for second-seeded Wiggins girls basketball, the Tigers didn’t need to win their 2A District 2 tournament to ensure their ride wouldn’t end there. They put together a strong enough regular season, going 13-6 through prior to the postseason. Their first two wins last week put them in the district finals against No. 4 Sedgwick

County, who subsequently defeated them 47-27.

Following the conclusion of the tournament on Saturday, the Tigers sat at No. 3 overall in 2A, meaning they’re guaranteed to keep dancing. Two strong wins to open districts certainly helped their case.

The Tigers first faced off with Holyoke — the seventh of eight seeds — and wasted absolutely no time dropping them in a 50-20 finish. Eight Tigers got in on the scoring action, led by sophomore Riley Hunt (13 points), senior Raelyn Koenig (11 points) and sophomore Kennedy Kerr (10 points).

Next, the Tigers went head-tohead with a much tougher Akron team, seeded third, but eventually took care of the Rams too with a 59-49 final. In that contest, Kerr took the lead with 18 points, and junior Tyleigh Fehseke backed her up with 13 more.

The ladies couldn’t match up to Sedgwick County in the district game, but showed time and again why they deserve to continue their ride into states. Prior to Saturday’s game, they’ve been averaging 46.4 points per game and relying on staunch defense to carry them to victory, adding 32.6 rebounds, 10.8 assists and 13.1 steals.
