Brush baseball begins season with a heartbreaker

- By Alissa Noe

Losses are never fun for anyone, but Brush baseball gritted out its season-opening setback all the way to the end.

When the Beetdiggers faced off with Fort Morgan on the road, they battled back from an early deficit and very nearly took the win away from the Mustangs, only to fall just short in the 6-5 loss. The Mustangs opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, then added another in the second before the Diggers were able to respond.

Brush put up a run in the top of third, making it 4-1, but gave up one more run in the fourth and fifth innings. Its offense found life in the top of the fifth, as the Diggers batted in three runs to draw the score to 6-4 with just a couple more innings to complete the comeback.

Neither team scored in the sixth frame, and Brush fell just short of coming full circle when it put up just one run in the top of the seventh before out three ended the game.

In the contest, Wiley Eicher led his boys at the plate with two RBIs and three hits, including a double. Ty Griffith added another three hits and an RBI as Nate Thyne and Tanner Ludgate batted in the other two runs.

The Diggers, now 0-1, are still searching for win number one and will have a shot at achieving it when they meet up with the Mean Moose of Alamosa at a neutral site on Saturday, March 25. The time for first pitch is yet to be determined.

The Mean Moose haven’t started their schedule yet, but by the time they meet up with the Diggers, they’ll have played six contests. That means they’ll have a lot more in-game experience under their belts than Brush.
