European roundup: Juve beat 10-man Milan; Barcelona’s teen dream debut

-

Manuel Locatelli secured a 1-0 win for Juventus at Milan in Serie A on Sunday with a second-half strike, after the hosts were reduced to 10 men when the defender Malick Thiaw received a straight red card.

A relatively slow-paced match took a surprising turn five minutes before the break when Thiaw received his marching orders for a last-man foul on Moise Kean. With the numerical advantage, Juve took charge and Locatelli scored in the 63rd minute with a deflected long-range shot off Rade Krunic, catching the Milan goalkeeper, Antonio Mirante, off guard. Juve are now third in the table with 20 points, with Milan second on 21, one point behind the leaders, Internazionale, after the ninth round of fixtures.

A 90th-minute goal from Stephan El Shaarawy secured a 1-0 win for Roma over 10-man Monza at the Stadio Olimpico before José Mourinho was shown a red card for gestures made towards the opposition’s staff. The victory is Roma’s third consecutive league win, and their fourth overall in Serie A this season.

A brave Monza side, who had Danilo D’Ambrosio sent off in the 41st minute after a second booking, looked like holding Roma to a scoreless draw, before El Shaarawy’s late goal gave the home team all three points.

The goal not only brought Monza to their knees, but also an ecstatic Mourinho. Roma’s poor start to the season meant they began the day in 11th place but they now move up to sixth on 14 points, overtaking Monza who slip to 11th on 12 points.

The Portuguese’s sending off in the 99th-minute means that he won’t be on the touchline for Roma’s next league game, away to his former club Internazionale. “I don’t know why I got the red card, I only made a gesture to the bench, not a single word,” Mourinho said. “The Monza bench put a lot of pressure on the referee, they shouldn’t have behaved like that.”

In La Liga, Barcelona’s teenage substitute Marc Guiu scored late in the second half on his debut to secure a 1-0 home win over Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, sending Xavi Hernandez’s side up to third, one point behind the leaders, Real Madrid, ahead of Saturday’s Clasico.

The 17-year-old Barça youth product latched on to a pass on the edge of the area and beat Unai Simon with a low shot after only his second touch of the ball to score his first league goal quicker than any player in the club’s history.

At 17 years 291 days, Guiu became the youngest player to score for Barcelona on his debut in La Liga this century. “I can’t believe it. I’m out of breath, enjoying the moment,” he told Esports 3. “This is unimaginable. I’ve been working all my life to take advantage of opportunities and it’s come to me.”

In Ligue 1, two goals by Aleksandr Golovin allowed Monaco to come from a goal down to beat Metz 2-1 at home and reclaim the top spot. Monaco now sit one point clear of Nice at the top of the table, on 20 points from nine games, and two above Paris Saint-Germain in third.
