Jordan Gill says he was ‘saved’ from suicide after loss to Martínez

- PA Media

Jordan Gill has revealed he was “saved” from killing himself after struggling to cope with the aftermath of his European featherweight title defeat to Kiko Martínez last year.

The Huntingdon boxer was speaking after completing a surprise seventhround stoppage win over the home favourite, Michael Conlan, in Belfast on Saturday night.

Gill told DAZN: “After the Martínez loss, I lost touch with myself. I broke up with my wife. On 30 June I was in a field … and I was going to kill myself. Somebody came and saved me that day.”

Despite starting as the underdog in their WBA international super-featherweight title fight, Gill floored Conlan in the second round and finished the fight in the seventh. Gill had won the European crown by beating Karim Guerfi in February last year, but lost it by fourthround stoppage to Martínez at Wembley eight months later.

“Tonight just wasn’t my night,” Conlan wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “I’m going to take some time out and be with my family. Congratulations to Jordan Gill who was victorious tonight. Belfast, as always thank you from the bottom of my heart for turning out in your numbers again.”
