Openings, closings around Indy in August
It’s the end of August, and it did slip away “like a moment in time,” to quote honorary Hoosier Taylor Swift.
Here’s the businesses that came and went around the Indianapolis metro area this month:
August openings around Indy Apollo’s Fine Fashions
When: Opened. Aug. 2
Where: 49 W. Maryland St. What:Apollo’s Fine Fashions, selling a variety of women’s and men’s apparel, moved its Lafayette location to Circle Centre Mall. Two more stores in the mall, Auspicious Boutique on level 3 near the food court and Eazy Peasy Candy on the second level also opened recently.
Mehndi + Marked
When: Opened Aug. 5
Where: 1339 Prospect St.
What: Indy tattoo fanatics have a new place to get inked. Mehndi + Marked opened in Fountain Square in early August, offering temporary henna and permanent ink what they call “a unique approach to the tattoo experience.”
The store also sells plants.
OVA Lofts
When: Opened Aug. 5
Where: 1317 Prospect St.
What: Fountain Square has a new spot to get primped. Ova Lofts, a beauty and salon complex, offers lash extensions, microblading, spa treatments and a hair salon, as well as bridal suites and event space.
Cafe Patachou
When: Opened Aug. 9
Where: 95 E. Pine St., Zionsville What: Cafe Patachou’s newest location opened off Pine Street in Zionsville in early August. The next Patachou location at the Stutz Building downtown is opening this fall, according to the website.
Semantics Paper Goods
When: Opened Aug. 12
Where: 111 E 16th St., Suite 103 What: A stationery shop is open in the Penn Arts Building after previously selling online only. Semantics Paper Goods sells a variety of cards and notebooks, as well as pens, stickers and other supplies.
We Don’t Run From Adversity
When: Opened Aug. 12
Where: 1060 N. Capitol Ave.
What: Indianapolis-based We Don’t Run From Adversity opened its first brick-and-mortar at the Stutz this month. A self-described “lifestyle brand” selling everything from apparel and accessories to home goods, We Don’t Run From Adversity is the first business selected as part of a city-funded pilot retail incubator.
The HandleBar Hanger
When: Opened Aug. 18
Where: 501 Madison Ave.
When: The HandleBars circling downtown Indy have an updated, brickand-mortar location. The Hangar, in addition to being the starting point for pedal bar tours, has a bar, e-bike rentals and golf simulators.
Mochinut
When: Opened Aug. 18
Where: 11630 Olio Rd. St 105, Fishers What: Fishers has a new donut spot — of the mochi variety. The Fishers Mochinut store is the 161st location of the national donut chain, serving a rotating weekly flavor menu, along with Korean corn dogs and boba.
Academy Sports Outdoors
When: Opened Aug. 25
Where: 1960 E. Greyhound Pass What: Hamilton County sports fans now have a new place to shop. The sporting goods store stocks a variety of outdoor recreation, sports gear and apparel. The Westfield location is the fifth store in Indiana, and Academy Sports is planning an additional location in Avon to open later this year.
Upland Brewery Clay Terrace
When: Opens Sept. 1
Where: 14490 Clay Terrace Blvd., Carmel
What: Upland Brewing is opening Friday at Clay Terrace. The brewery will feature a rotating beer list and seasonal food menu, according to the Upland website.
August closings around Indy Studio Movie Grill
When: Closed Aug. 16
Where: 3535 W. 86th St.
What: After a decade, Studio Movie Grill closed its Indianapolis location this month. The movie theater, which also served food, said it would refund customers for tickets bought before the closure announcement.
O’Charley’s
When: Closed Aug. 20
Where: 16725 Mercantile Blvd., Noblesville
What: Noblesville and Avon O’Charley’s regulars had to say goodbye this month as both locations permanently closed due to economic pressures from the pandemic. Locations of the restaurant in Indianapolis and Greenwood are still open.
