Explore the underwater world with Sanibel Sea School

At Sanibel Sea School, a nonprofit that offers unique ocean learning experiences, every day is a field trip. Whether it’s snorkeling for sand dollars, searching for seahorses, or venturing out to find the best shelling and birdwatching opportunities on the islands, there is always something new to be discovered. Join the organization’s enthusiastic educators for a morning of ocean exploration. You’ll be sure to leave with a deeper appreciation for the natural world (and probably a few new treasures to add to your beachcomber’s collection).

At South Seas Island Resort and its flagship campus on Sanibel Island, the Sea School offers year-round day programs for kids ages 6 to 13, each based on a different marine creature or habitat. On a typical day, students might learn to use a seine net, observe dolphins in their natural habitat, or collect plankton to view under a microscope. “These islands are unlike anywhere else in the world,” says educator Shannon Stainken. “Our shallow waters provide habitat for so many plants and animals, and we are constantly amazed by what we find. We love sharing the ocean’s magic with our guests.”

Sanibel Sea School also offers regularly scheduled Discover Shelling and Guided Birdwatching walks on the South Seas Island Resort property. These family-oriented programs provide a basic introduction to the world-class shelling and birding opportunities on our islands, and group leaders offer tips to help you make the most of your time while exploring our wildlife sanctuary. Additionally, a variety of private, customizable programs can be arranged for families and groups. “Our goal is to help every visitor create a meaningful, lasting connection with the sea,” says Stainken. “We hope that every person we teach will continue to learn about, explore and love the ocean long after they go home.”
