Sierra — an outdoor retailer — will open a store in Overland Park’s Bluhawk development this month.

The first Kansas City area location is set to open at 7860 W. 161th St., Suite J101, on May 18, according to the company.

Sierra (formerly called Sierra Trading Post) sells athletic clothing, as well as gear for hiking, hunting and camping. It has locations in several states, like Colorado,

Utah, Illinois and Minnesota. Its only other Kansas location is in Wichita. There are none in Missouri.

The brand is owned by TJX Companies, which also owns TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Home Goods and Homesense.

The store will be the latest of several retailers to join the Bluhawk development in south Overland Park, which is home to Of Course Kitchen & Co., Magic Noodle, Cosentino’s Market and more.

A 420,000 square foot sports park called the Advent Health Sports

Park at Bluhawk is being built nearby. The first phase of the sports park — 260,000 square feet of volleyball courts, basketball courts, turf and an ice rink — is set to open this fall.

Sierra will join several other outdoor retailers in the market, including gargantuan Bass Pro Shops, The North Face and Scheels.

Gearhead Outfitters recently took over the old Moosejaw space in Olathe at 686 N. Central St.
