Steam engine arrives in Kutztown
Allentown & Auburn Railroad offers steam powered train trips in October
A steam engine arrived in Kutztown on the morning of Oct. 4.
The Gramling family delivered a newly restored Jeddo Coal #85 to the Kutztown Train Station.
Allentown & Auburn Railroad will be running steam powered train trips in October, opening with the Oct. 6 Steam Under the Stars moonlit steam powered ride at 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Rides will be held Oct. 7, 8, 14 and 15 at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Allentown & Auburn Railroad runs steam engine powered events once a year.
“This year we are using Jeddo Coal Company #85, which belongs to Gramling Locomotive Works. It is the nation’s most recently restored steam engine,” according to a Allentown & Auburn Railroad release. “The Gramling family has been restoring steam engines for several years.”
According to the release, the Gramling family stars in a series called “Have Steam Engine, Will Travel” on select PBS stations.
“The series chronicles the family’s travels as they travel the country with their steamers. The bring their engines to different locations on modified flat bed trailers,” writes Allentown & Auburn Railroad in the release. “It is a very unique sight, seeing a steam engine heading down the highway, and a fascinating process to watch when they unload.”
Kutztown is the second stop on #85’s inaugural tour.
“This is also the closest that this engine has been to it’s original home in Hazleton for more than half a lifetime. We are very excited to be welcoming them to Kutztown,” writes Allentown & Auburn Railroad.
