108 new cases confirmed by health officials

State health officials say almost 110 Michigande­rs have new confirmed cases of coronaviru­s.

Additional­ly, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is releasing data showing the number of probable COVID-19 cases and deaths. The probable cases total 5,891 while the probable deaths total 245.

Probable cases include individual­s who never tested positive for the virus, but who were presumed to be infected due to their symptoms and past exposure. A probable death is defined as those whose death certificat­e listed COVID-19 as a cause of death or a significan­t condition contributi­ng to death.

Oakland County has 2,760 probable cases and 41 probable deaths. In Detroit, the probable case and death totals are 406 and 84. The rest of Wayne County has 299 probable cases and 35 probable deaths.

In Macomb County, state health officials say there have

been 161 probable cases and 38 probable deaths.

On Tuesday afternoon, the confirmed death total rose to 5,698 while the confirmed case total increased to 59,107. There were 25 new deaths and 108 new cases confirmed by state health officials.

Combined together, the total number of confirmed and probable cases total 64,998 while the total number of confirmed and probable deaths total 5,943.

Breaking down data

Health officials have also been tracking results of statewide testing. On June 2, the latest data available, there were 516 positive results for the COVID-19 virus, or 3.3%, from 15,569 total specimens tested.

Overall, the coronaviru­s remains deadliest to older people, especially men.

The average age of those killed is 75 years old and the median age of those killed is 77. While men make up 47 percent of overall cases, they make up 53 percent of those killed. Those 70 and older make up 69 percent of deaths.

As of June 5, a total of 42,041 Michigande­rs have recovered from COVID-19 (30 days out from onset of illness).

Disease in context

Worldwide, the number of deaths topped 408,811 and the number of cases is over 7.1 million, according to coronaviru­s researcher­s at Johns Hopkins University. The United States, Brazil, Italy, and the United Kingdom all have more than 30,000 deaths.

In the United States, the total number of confirmed cases has topped 1.9 million, standing Tuesday at 1,971,302 total cases with 111,620 deaths.

There have been approximat­ely 20 million tests conducted in the U.S. Michigan ranks 8th on the list with 721,035 tested.

The State of Michigan currently has the capacity to perform around 21,000 COVID-19 diagnostic tests per day. The statewide testing capacity goal for June is 30,000 tests.
