State reports over 700 confirmed cases on Wednesday

Michigan reported 705 new confirmed cases of coronaviru­s and 12 new confirmed deaths due to the virus on Wednesday, according to the state’s website.

This brings the state to 118,615 confirmed cases and 6,692 conf irmed deaths, numbers which follow the United States’ surpassing of 200,000 confirmed deaths on Tuesday, according to John Hopkins University.

With 12,644 probable cases and 321 probable deaths, Michigan’s totals now stand at 131,259 confirmed and probable cases and 7,013 confirmed and probable deaths.

Probable cases include individual­s who never tested positive for the virus, but who were presumed to be infected due to their symptoms and past exposure.

Similarly, a probable death is defined as those whose death certificat­e listed COVID-19 as a cause of death or a significan­t condition contributi­ng to death.

Averages and Totals

The 7- day average on Wednesday was about 679 confirmed cases and about 9 confirmed deaths added per day.

The 7-day total was 4,752 new confirmed cases added and 69 confirmed deaths.

So far in September, 16,147 confirmed cases and 208 confirmed deaths have been added, which is an average of about 702 confirmed cases and 9 deaths per day for the month.

Of that, 10,715 confirmed cases and 126 confirmed deaths were reported in the first half of the month, from September 1-15, averaging 714 confirmed cases and 9 confirmed deaths added per day.

In the last half of the month, so far, 5,432 confirmed cases and 80 confirmed deaths have been reported, which is about 603 confirmed cases and 9 confirmed deaths added per day.

In comparison, August 1-15 added 10,536 confirmed cases and 123 confirmed deaths, averaging 702 confirmed cases and 8 confirmed deaths per day.

In the last half of August, from August 16-31, 10,333 confirmed cases and 142 confirmed deaths were added, which is about 646 confirmed cases and 9 confirmed deaths added per day.

August added a total of 20,869 confirmed cases and 265 confirmed deaths, which is an average of about 673 confirmed cases and 9 confirmed deaths added per day.

In comparison, August 1-15 added 10,536 confirmed cases and 123 confirmed deaths, averaging 702 confirmed cases and 8 confirmed deaths per day.

In the last half of August, from August 16-31, 10,333 confirmed cases and 142 confirmed deaths were added, which is about 646 confirmed cases and 9 confirmed deaths added per day.

Disease in Context

According to data accumulate­d by John Hopkins University, worldwide, over 31.7 million cases have been reported, and 973,014 deaths have occurred.

In the United States, as of Monday, over 6.9 million cases have been reported with more than 201,549 deaths tied to the disease.

The U.S. hit 200,000 deaths due to the virus around 11:40 a.m. on Tuesday, andat least 1,549deaths have been added since then.

India remained second in the world in the number of cases, with over 5.6 million cases, and Brazil was second globally in the number of deaths, with 138,105 deaths, John Hopkins reports.

John Hopkins ranks Michigan as the ninth state in the U.S. with themost total number of deaths, with New York as first.

On Wednesday, in a latestage study by Johnson & Johnson, a large internatio­nal study of a COVID-19 vaccine that is aiming to work with just one dose, got underway as hopes for getting answers about the at least one of the several vaccine candidates by the endof the year buoyed.

Tally of Cases

In the city of Detroit on Wednesday, 14,264 confirmed cases and 1,522 confirmed deaths were reported, meaning there were 25 new confirmed cases and 3 new confirmed deaths cited in the city since Tuesday.

The rest of Wayne County had 69 new confirmed cases and 2 new confirmed deaths on Wednesday, making 17,952 confirmed cases and 1,279 confirmed deaths in the county. Oakland County saw 16,242 confirmed cases and 1,147 confirmed deaths on Wednesday, with 48 confirmed cases and 1 new confirmed death reported.

There were 13,700 confirmed cases and 967 confirmed deaths in Macomb County on Wednesday, meaning there were 54 confirmed cases and no new confirmed deaths since Tuesday.

In Mid-Michigan, 611 confirmed cases and 13 confirmed deaths were quoted in Isabella County on Wednesday, with 8 new confirmed cases and no new confirmed deaths.

Gratiot County had 227 confirmed cases and 15 confirmed deaths on Wednesday, making 2 new confirmed cases and no new confirmed deaths.

And, Clare County cited 103 confirmed cases and 4 confirmed deaths, meaning 1 new confirmed case and no new confirmed deaths were reported.

Several counties around the state continued the trend of adding confirmed cases due to students going back to school at Michigan universiti­es.

Ingham County, where Michigan State is located, added 65 new confirmed cases on Wednesday, making 3,289 confirmed cases.

Kent County, where Grand Valley State University is, added 68 cases on Wednesday, making 8,813 confirmed cases in the county.

Genesee County, where Kettering University and University of Michigan — Flint are, 24 new confirmed cases were reported on Wednesday, creating 3,602 confirmed cases.

Washtenaw County, home to University of Michigan, had 14 new confirmed cases, bringing its total to 3,040 confirmed cases.

Also, Ottawa County, were Hope College is, aswell as Holland and Grand Haven are, added 42 new confirmed cases on Wednesday, making 3,138 confirmed cases.

With 12,644 probable cases and 321 probable deaths, Michigan’s totals now stand at 131,259 confirmed and probable cases and 7,013 confirmed and probable deaths.

Who was tested?

Health officials have also been tracking results of statewide testing.

To date, 3,747,452 total diagnostic and serology tests have been conducted within the state of Michigan. So far, 3,460,290 diagnostic tests have been conducted.

As of last Friday, a total of 90,216 Michigande­rs have recovered from COVID-19 (30 days out from onset of illness), a total which is updated by the state every Saturday.
