State sees more than 900 cases for second day in a row

Michigan reported 929 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 Friday, Sept. 25, 2020, after Thursday’s total of 982 new cases.

In total, more than 18,000 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in September, with an average of 734 cases per day over the past week.

Addtionall­y, 8 coronaviru­s-related deaths were reported Friday.

This brings Michigan’s total to 120,456 confirmed cases since the pandemic’s onset, and 6,708 deaths.

Including 12,851 probable cases and 319 probable deaths, the state’s totals are 133,377 cases and 7,027 deaths.

A probable case is a person who has COVID-19 symptoms and an epidemiolo­gic link to confirmed COVID-19, but has not been tested. A probable death is someone with COVID-19 listed as a cause or contributi­ng factor on a death certificat­e.

By county

Oakland County saw 71 new COVID-19 cases Friday, bringing its total to 16,407 since the pandemic began. No new COVID-19 deaths were reported in the county.

Macomb County saw 70 new cases, now at 13,861 total. Three new deaths bring the county’s total to 972.

Wayne County, excluding Detroit, reported 67 new cases and one new death. It now has totals of 18,159 cases and 1,283 deaths.

Detroit’s 22 new cases raised its total to 14,336. Two new deaths were also reported, now at 1,523 total.

In mid-Michigan, Isabella County added five more cases to its total, now at 621. Gratiot County saw an additional four cases, nowat 231. ClareCount­y reported a single case, bringing its total to 103. No new COVID-19 deaths were reported in any of the three counties.

Westward, Kent County added 79 new cases and two more deaths. Ottawa County reported 38 new cases, and Kalamazoo County reported 46 new cases. Neither Kalamazoo nor Ottawa reported any COVID-19 deaths Friday.

The Michigan Department of Correction­s reported two new cases, now at 5,585.

Onnagon County, the only Michigan county to report no COVID-19 deaths, has reported no new cases for the past week. It remains at 41 cases and zero COVID-19 deaths.

The bigger picture

The U.S. has just over 7 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, and just over 203,000 deaths, according to Johns-Hopkins University.

Globally, 32.3 million confirmed cases have been reported, and nearly 985,000 deaths.

This means 21.6 percent of confirmed COVIDcases and 20.6 percent of COVID-19 deaths have been reported in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the United States represents 4.23 percent of the world’s population.

India now has nearly 58.2 million cases, making it the second-most infected country in the world. Its 92,000 deaths make it the country with the third-highest COVID-19 lethality.
