Four musicians with Macomb County roots are hoping for a break on the alternative rock music scene.
Seth Morrison, Aaron Decker, Michael DiGiovanni and Kevin Sachs, all 2018 Eisenhower High School graduates, are collectively known as The Freezer Bees, an alternative rock group.
The youngmenmetwhile inMarching Band at Eisenhower High School and have been playing together since. Morrison sings and strums guitar, Decker sings and plays the keys, DiGiovanni is on drums, and Sachs plays bass.
The
Freezer Bees
released
their first two singles — “Bedhead” and “Sunburn,” available on Spotify, Apple Music Google Play, YouTube Music and most other digital services — inAugust. An untitled albumis in the works with a tentative release by the end of this year.
Although classified by digitalmusic platforms as alternative, The Freezer Bees themselves say they don’t fit into any category. Morrison says they’re inspired bymusic by Cage the Elephant, the White Stripes, Chicago and even jazz musician Jacob Collier.
“I would say our sound pays homage to Detroit’s history of rock music, but we also put our own spin on it,” Morrison says. “We don’t give genre a thought until we are done because we are just trying tomake originalmusic.”
The Bees’ original sound started on the football field at Ike, where each member played on the band’s drum line. In 2017 the students formed a group called Daddy and the Buddies for Eisenhower’s PoetryDay, a day devoted to reading poetry during every English class. Instead of poetry, the group performed cover songs such as the Killers “Somebody Told Me” and other songs that had meaning for them. The youngmen agreed after Poetry Day that they wanted to continue performing together, and before long, The Freezer Bees was born.
There’s no particular meaning behind the name of the group, Decker says, they just liked the sound of it.
