Warren resident, 20, held in police custody
A teenager remained hospitalized in critical condition Sunday after he was shot in the head while he and another personwere showing off their guns at a gathering in Roseville, according to police.
The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. inside of a house on the 17000 block of Ivanhoe Street near Pinehurst, in the area west of Gratiot Avenue and south of Martin.
Police were dispatched to the house to respondto a report of the teen having been shot one time, Deputy Police Chief Mitch Berlin said in a news release.
“Preliminary information is that two people were showing each other their illegal handguns,” Berlin said in the release. “When the suspect unintentionally discharged the handgun striking the victim in the head.”
The person who fired the gun is a 20-year- old Warren man, who was being held in custody at the Roseville Police Department
pending further investigation. Detectives plan to meet today with Macomb County prosecutors to determine what criminal charges may be filed.
Berlin said the victim was transported to an area hospital by Roseville firefighters. The victim, a 17-year-old resident of Macomb Township, is listed in critical condition, police said.
Witnesses who were present during a small gathering of about seven people told investigators the shooting was accidental. All of the witnesses have cooperated with police, Berlin said.
According to the Macomb County Scanner website, the Warren man who discharged the gun thought he had taken all of the bullets out of the weapon, but apparently didn’t realize one round was still in the chamber.
