Lutheran North’s girls golf team thought the weather Wednesday was beautiful.

Part of it was because the Mustangs finished first at the Macomb County Invitational at Cherry Creek Golf Club, ending Eisenhower’s two-year reign.

The other part was that North played under much worse conditions Monday at the Catholic League championships.

“Conditions were terrible (Monday) rainy, cold,” said junior captain Sarah Doletzky. “It was a lot better today, It was a bit drizzly, but it was nice compared to Monday. Itwas fun. It’s a challenging course, tough greens, but our team has done really well this season.”

Coach John Bergmann felt that Monday’s round helped prepare the Mustangs for the county tournament.

“Our girls adapted to the cold weather,” Bergmann said. “We had the opportunity to play Monday in the rain and cold, so they

were well-prepared for today, knowing it was going to be less than ideal. It worked out well for them”

North finished with a team score of 341, led by freshman Lauren Timpf with a 75. Timpf’s score was second to four-time meet medalist Ariel Chang of Eisenhower, who shot a six-under66.

Eisenhower finished second with a 369 total and Regina was third with 375.

North has a tradition of success in girls golf. The Mustangs are hoping to qualify for the state meet for the 10th straight season.

“We know what’s expected of us, just come in ready to win every year and keep that in mind the whole time,” Doletzky said. “We practice really hard every day for at least two hours.

“This year if we go to states, it’s our 10th year. That’s something we’re really looking forward to. We’d like to make it 10 years and then continue that. We’ve got a couple good freshmen coming up and one on the team now (Timpf). She’s been a blessing to this team.”

Bergmann, who replaced Hall of Fame coach Lori Gill last season, said that Wednesday’s performance was typical of the Mustangs this year.

“They’ve put in a lot of hard work throughout the season,” he said. “We had strong scores from all five of our girls. That’s how we’ve been playing all season. They just followed through on what they’ve been working on.”

Bergmann said the addition of Timpf has been a plus for North and not just because of the scores she posts.

“She’s quite talented. That makes it easy to coach,” he said. “She works hard and she definitely understands the game. That helps drive the rest of the team because she wants to win and they all want to play well. Our team aspires to play as well as she is playing.”

Bergmann said North wasn’t expected to qualify for the state meet last year. This year is a different story.

“This year the expectation is we WILL qualify for states,” Bergmann said. “The girls take pride in (the legacy). It’s not like we had a class of seniors that carried the team all the way through. This year we have two seniors, a junior, two sophomores and a freshman. They’re all starting to learn that winning is part of what we want to do here. They definitely know there’s a tradition they want to carry on.”

Following Timpf in the scoring were Taylor Elias and Doletzky with 86s and Julia Zauel with 94.

Although he was disappointed that Eisenhower didn’t win its third straight county championship, coach Jerry Griesbeck was able to find a silver lining.

“All year we’ve had a hard time finding a fourth scorer,” he said. “Today Riley (Dupke) and Lauren (Sharplin) had the best scores they’ve shot in their entire career here. It gives hope that we can fill that fourth place and do better in the future — like next week in the regional. Something very good came out of this today. I saw phenomenal improvement out of my fourth and fifth players.”

Griesbeck, who is the tournament director, had high praise for the Cherry Creek staff.

“I’m glad (the meet) went well today,” he said. “It’s nice working with the staff at Cherry Creek. They’re very youth-oriented and they promote sports for youth. They’re exceptionally good to us. The girls feel comfortable coming here. We’re fortunate to call this our home course,”
