Anchor Bay girls, Cousino boys enjoy jamboree wins
Cross country runners know there’s going to be some pain involved in the sport.
Running as fast as they can for 3.1 miles is not a leisurely endeavor. And that is just the official distance at meets.
Spinning the odometer even longer than that during training is nobody’s idea of a day at the spa.
At least even the most inexperienced distance runners at Anchor Bay get some forewarning. Their coach’s name is Jeff Payne.
It wasn’t just the odometer that has been working overtime. The speedometer is not exactly slacking off, either.
Coach Payne’s girls team captured first place in the MAC White Division second jamboree hosted by Warren-Mott High School.
The Tars finished with 41 points. Port Huron Northern came in second with 66 and Ford
tallied 88. Following were Warren Mott 98; Chippewa Valley 106; Fraser 114 and L’Anse Creuse North 170.
Anchor Bay junior Cora Kolodge repeated as jamboree champion. She finished the 3.1 mile course in 20:31.00. Hannah Dean of Warren Mott came in second at 21:37.00. Three Port Huron Northern athletes completed the top five: Tessa Vanderheuvel 21:38.00; Therese Georgia 21:45.00 and Dylan Pasia 21:47.00.
Anchor Bay had two more runners in the top 10: Carlie Woolm (6th) 21:50.00 and Grace Ragsdale (8th) 22:12. The Tars’ fifth runner was Serena Arnold (11th) 22:54.00.
“The girls have worked very hard for this,” said Payne. “We tried doing a few things differently in terms of race strategy that not only helped uswith the win but will hopefully help us in October’s championship meet season.
“They are a fun group of girls to coach. Junior Cora Kolodge, who won both jamborees, has achieved a high level of success each year and continues to do well. The improvement shown by Carlie Woolm, Serena Arnold and Ashley Stoneman and the spirit brought by our number three runner, Grace Ragsdale, has been equally important this fall.
“At both jamborees, our sixth and seventh runners pushed out scoring runners from every team in the division. They are Lauren Radtke and Delaney Streveler. This was a pretty big deal for us, especially against PHN. They matched us pretty well up front but it was our depth that carried us past them,” continued Payne.
There was no pain on the faces of the boys from Cousino. They were ecstatic after capturing their second MAC Blue jamboree championship of the season. The meet was hosted by Marysville and held at Goodells County Park.
Coach Grant Syswerda’s team finished with 21 points. Marine City totalled
64 and Marysville 73. Following were Lakeview 116, Warren WoodsTower 127, Lake Shore 149, Sterling Heights 181 and Roseville 215.
The Patriots’ Dominic Suliman was the top individual runner. He finished in 16:29.6. Teammate Carson Dych came in second in 16:50.7. Also for Cousino in the top 10 were Jacob Schang (4th) 17:34.6; Ryan Gielegham (5th) 17:42.4 and Ryan Glant (9th) 18:18.3.
“I am so proud of all of them. Dominic hasn’t lost a race yet this season. Carson broke 17:00. He’s an amazing athlete. Jacob’s consistency and work ethic humble me. Ryan Gielegham probably ran the best race of all our guys. Ryan Glant just won’t quit,” said Syswerda. “He is a problem for anyone racing in his vicinity. Manny and Donovan ran amazing races too.”
Emmanuel Baranyk finished 17th in 18:48.3. Donovan Kelley came in 29th in 19:35.6.

Aheader in the 80thminute by Sterling Heights’ senior captain Agron Gojcaj turned into a big migraine for Warren Mott.

scored his team’s first goal with 24 minutes remaining to knot the score at 1-1. Gabe Samano and Aldin Saljic picked up assists.
The back line of Gojcaj, Dabe Astayfo, Sam Tripon and Ayden Djelevic was outstanding, while keeper Ramon Arellano made five saves.
