A Clinton Township driver and her passenger are behind bars after they were arrested for fleeing police and ramming two police vehicles during a pursuit last week.

According to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, when deputies were finally able to stop the couple, they discovered a handgun in the car. The pair also has outstanding arrest warrants fromNewMexico.

“This was another situation where a routine traffic stop turns into a pursuit,” Sheriff Anthony Wickersham told reporters. “They didn’t want us to find that weapon.”

Jamie Storing, 31, is charged with third- degree fleeing a police officer and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. Her boyfriend, Jacob Cuellar,

28, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, is charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

Both also have warrants out of New Mexico for receiving and concealing stolen property, according to sheriff’s investigators.

Investigators say the couple live in NewMexico, but were visiting Storing’s family in Michigan when

they ran into trouble.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies saw a red Chevy pickup truck run a red light at Crocker Boulevard and Harper Avenue about 12:20 a.m. Thursday. As a deputy walked up to the truck, the drive sped away and entered nearby eastbound Interstate 94.

With the truck driver going about 80 mph, the vehicle exited I-94 at 23 Mile Road in Chesterfield Township, then got back on eastbound I- 94 toward Port Huron.

Deputies were able to put out stop sticks across the eastbound lanes of the freeway. One of the truck’s tires struck the strip, def lating it. Dash camera video played at a news conference show sparks coming from the truck as the tire rode on its rim.

Deputies continued to try to stop the truck by boxing it in with their patrol vehicles, but the truck driver began to ramtwo of the sheriff’s vehicles.

One patrol car was struck from behind and sent skidding off I-94 into a field. The truck then rammed another deputy’s vehicle and become locked onto its push bumper. The truck scraped up against a guardrail and the deputy crashed into the truck’s side door.

The truck finally came to a stop on eastbound I-94 near Meldrum. The occupants were then taken into custody.

Wickersham said the .22-caliber handgun found in the car was not stolen. He said the suspects told deputies that guns don’t have to be registered in New Mexico, which is where they received the weapon.

The first deputy whose car was rammed by the suspects was transported to a nearby hospital to be checked out. He was released later Thursday after it was determined he had no injuries.
