State adds 1,016 confirmed cases

Over 1,000 new confirmed cases of coronaviru­s, 1,016 to be exact, were reported on Wednesday in Michigan, according to the state’s website.

There were also nine new confirmed deaths due to the virus, making 6,847 confirmed deaths total in the state.

This also puts Michigan at 130,842 confirmed cases; and, with 14,250 probable cases and 322 probable deaths, this means there are now 145,092 total confirmed and probable cases and 7,169 confirmed and probable deaths.

Probable cases include individual­s who never tested positive for the virus, but who were presumed to be infected due to their symptoms and past exposure.

Similarly, a probable death is defined as those whose death certificat­e listed COVID-19 as a cause ofdeathor a significan­t condition contributi­ng to death.

Disease in Context

Globally, the number of cases of COVID-19 reached nearly 36 million with deaths at more than 1.05 million.

And, in theUnited States, which still has the most cases and deaths worldwide, the caseload exceeded 7.5million and deaths were over 211,000, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Johns Hopkins ranks Michigan as the tenth state in theU.S. with the most total number of deaths, with New York as first.

Testing

Health officials have also been tracking results of statewide testing.

To date, 4,217,251 total diagnostic and serology tests have been conductedw­ithin the state of Michigan. So far, 3,915,651 diagnostic tests and 301,600 serology tests have been conducted.

A diagnostic test looks for genes or proteins from SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. It indicates whether a person currently has the virus.

Serologyte­sts look for the possibilit­y of a previous infection by scanning for antibodies.

As of Friday, a total of 99,521 Michigande­rs have recovered from COVID-19 (30 days out from onset of illness), a total which is updated by the state every Saturday.

Averages and Totals

The seven-day average onWednesda­ywas 879 new confirmed cases and about 12 new confirmed deaths added per day.

The seven-day total for this week was 6,155 new confirmed cases added and 85 new confirmed deaths.

These are also the averagesan­d totals so far for the month of October.

This is in comparison to the first week of September, whichadded­4,903new confirmed cases and 54 confirmed deaths.

There were also an average of about 700 new confirmedc­asesand8ne­wconfirmed deaths for thatweek.

In total, September added 22,219 confirmed cases and 278 confirmed deaths, averaging 741 new confirmed cases and nine confirmed deaths per day for the entire month.

Tally of Cases

Wayne County, excluding thecityofD­etroit, addedthe most cases in the state and theDetroit areaonWedn­esdaywith 175, pushing its total to 19,067.

Macomb County followed with 87 new confirmed cases, leaving itwith 14,785 cases.

The county surpassed the city of Detroit, long the hardest-hit area in the state, in the case-count earlier in the week.

The city of Detroit reported 28 new cases on Wednesday, meaning there are now 14,615 confirmed cases in the city.

Third in the Metro Area was Oakland County, which saw66 new cases on Wednesday, for a total of 17,213 confirmed cases.

Kent County reported 83 new confirmed cases on Wednesday, bringing its total to 9,999 cases, nearly 10,000.

In Mid-Michigan on Wednesday, Isabella County had16newco­nfirmedcas­es, meaning there are now 693 cases in the county.

Gratiot County reported two new cases and Clare County reported one new confirmed case, totaling 274 and 115 confirmed cases, respective­ly.
