COVID-19 cases up by 1,809 over past 2 days

Michigan added 1,809 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, covering a two-day period.

While averaging more than900 for the two-day period, as Sundays no longer get an individual update, this week’s report is about 400 cases higher than last Monday, Oct. 5.

On Monday, Michigan reached 136,465 confirmed coronaviru­s cases, while the seven new deaths reported on Monday bring the total to 6,898. The seven-day average of new coronaviru­s infections was at 1,077, the highest level of the summer and fall. So far in October, there have been 11,778 positive COVID-19 cases. For this period of September, there were 9,056 cases, and in this period of August, there were just 7,652.

During August, the seven-day average generally stayed in the range of the 600s or 700s, occasional­ly dipping to the mid-500s or rising as high as just over 800 for one day. In September, it was a similar story with the first part of the month in the600-750 range, but by the end of themonth, theywere trending into the 800s.

Throughout October, the seven-day average has been in the 800s or low 900s before jumping above 1,000 on Saturday, Oct. 10.

In September, the state stopped reporting updates on Sundays, and this has been the highest Monday update. The past Monday reports include:

• Sept. 07: 1,156

• Sept. 14: 1,088

• Sept. 21: 1,536

• Sept. 28: 1,308

• Oct. 05: 1,407

• Oct. 12; 1,809.

The update on Monday came as the worldwide cases numbered nearly 37.7 million with nearly 1.08 million deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the U.S., the cases numbered nearly 7.8 million with deaths about to reach 215,000. Michigan ranked 18th, overtaken by Wisconsin, where cases have been surging drasticall­y. In Michigan, 151,396 total cases have been reported, including the nearly 15,000 probable cases.

Local trends

Cases continue to rise in western Michigan’s Kent County, where 235 cases were reported Monday. The county, home to Grand Rapids, had 10,636 confirmed cases. Deaths have stayed low, though, with only 169 deaths reported. In one month, Kent County has added 2,387 cases but deaths have not moved up. Over the past few weeks, a handful of deaths have been reported but the number moved downwards as deaths were removed from Kent County’s tally.

On Monday, both Macomb and Oakland counties added 153 cases.

In Oakland County, the total number of confirmed cases stood at 17,704, while Macomb County was at 15,248.

Wayne County excluding Detroit added 123 cases to reach 19,510.

And Detroit added 30 cases to reach 14,734.

In the Flint area, Genesee County added 91 cases to reach 4,547, and to the west of Detroit, Washtenaw County added 62 cases to reach 3,756. In mid-Michigan, Ingham County added 63 cases to reach 3,975.

To the north, Isabella County — home to Central Michigan University — added 31 cases to end the day at 762. Gratiot County, home to Alma, added 10 cases to reach 311. Clare County added three to reach 140.
