The loss of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is significant; her absence leaves a void that will be felt across the country for years to come. Justice Ginsburg unfailingly stood up for equality, in all cases, in all situations. Her legacy, rich in milestones, is now in jeopardy as Republican Leader Mitch McConnell looks to fill the vacancy with less than five weeks until the election.
According to the New York Times, there has only been one other occurrence of a Supreme Court vacancy so close to a presidential election, which was the 1864 election. Twenty-seven days before the election, President Abraham Lincoln chose to delay his Supreme Court nomination until after the election. Now, in 2020, we need to recall Lincoln’s example. Justice Bader Ginsberg’s Supreme Court vacancy must be nominated by the next president and confirmed by the next Senate.
The U.S. Senate has a vital role in the confirmation of the next Supreme Court Justice as well as in ensuring democracy. Because the U.S. Senate has failed to approve the HEROES Act, which was passed by the House of Representative, schools and businesses were forced to navigate reopening with little to no support from our federal government. The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the importance of frontline healthcare workers, the need for quality healthcare and safe facilities, and the urgent need to protect those with pre-existing conditions. The lack of response by the U.S. Senate has hurt nearly every single American.
John James cannot be elected since that will simply provide a “yes” vote for the Republican agenda. A vote to elect James will further do damage to working people, continue the elimination of the middle class, prolong the COVID-19 crisis, and continue the attacks on our public education system.
Senator Gary Peters, a veteran and experienced advocate for the good working people of Michigan, deserves our vote. He is a proven hard worker, trustworthy and will continue to do the right thing for all of us.
