Attorney: Carjacking is not ‘typical’
A Sterling Heights man recently pleaded no contest to a Roseville carjacking, an incident his attorney said was not “a typical carjacking.”
Patrick Dietz, 35, pleaded last week to carjacking in exchange for dismissal of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and carrying a concealed weapon, in a plea deal with Macomb County prosecutors, in Circuit Court.
Dietz’s attorney, Mark Haddad, also secured a sentencing agreement with circuit Judge James Maceroni but declined to reveal its contents. Haddad said outside court the incident wasn’t randomas Dietz and his accuser were acquaintances and were involved in drug transactions.
“This isn’t a typical carjacking where some street thugs carjack your grandmother at the gas station,” he said.
Dietzwill be able towithdraw his plea if Maceroni pulls out of the agreement at the Nov. 17 sentencing.
Police said Dietz got a ride from the victim, an acquaintance, at about 1:30 a.m. April 15 from the area of Jefferson Avenue and Shook Road in Harrison Township. He was driven to an area near 12Mile and Utica roads, where he allegedly held a gun to the victim, who fled, police said. Dietz drove the car but crashed it on Interstate 94 near 13 Mile Road and fled on foot.
Hewas caught three days later by theDetroit Fugitive Apprehension Team of the U.S. Marshal’s Service, police said.
Dietz remains held in the county jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond.
