- — Macomb Daily Staff

This week’s list of school-related outbreak reporting of the coronavirus in Michigan includes three locations in Macomb County.

Lake Shore High School in St. Clair Shores, part of the Lake Shore Public Schools district in St. Clair Shores, reported four cases of the virus being contracted. The number included both staff and students.

Mound Park Elementary School, part of the Fitzgerald Public Schools in southwest Warren, reported two cases of contracting the virus, both by staff members.

Tenniswood Elementary School in Clinton Township, part of the L’Anse Creuse Public Schools, also reported two cases, one from a student and one from a staff member.

The state of Michigan reported 45 school outbreaks of COVID-19 in its Monday update on coronavirus in schools.

Three counties are listed as having four schools with outbreaks, including Wayne, Marquette and Lapeer counties.

The outbreaks listed in the state for this week cover 147 students and staff.

Last week’s report identified 30 outbreaks involving 109 students and staff.

The largest outbreak was in Benzie County and involved 11 students.

Three outbreaks involved seven students and/or staff, including Canton High School in Wayne County, Big Rapids Middle School in Mecosta County, and East Kentwood High School in Kent County.

The state also reported three outbreaks involving six infections, including Big Rapids High School, Heritage Christian Academy in Kalamazoo County, and Lowell High School in Kent County.

In accordance with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists’ outbreak definition, educational institutions (i.e., grades K-12 and institutions of higher education) that have been found by their local health department to have two or more COVID-19 cases who may have shared exposure on school grounds and are from different households are included. Case counts for school-related outbreaks include those associated with before and after school programs (e.g., school-sponsored sports). When applicable, outbreak reporting also includes cases originating from on-campus and offcampus student housing.

If your institution is listed, the local health department and school are investigating the outbreak and will contact you directly if you (or your minor/child) were possibly exposed to coronavirus on the school grounds. Students or staff who were exposed to COVID-19 outside of school grounds and are not thought to have spread the disease on the school grounds (due to quarantine, self-isolation, etc.) are not included in the tables below.

Last week saw a significant hike in the number of COVID-19 cases in Michigan, with more than 20,000 cases reported in the last seven days. The month ended with more than 53,000 cases, more than double the infections found in September.
