A bar bouncer was shot and wounded early Sunday morning outside a St. Clair Shores establishment that has been the site of two fatal incidents in recent years.

Trennel l V. Dunson, 26, of Clinton Township, is accused of shooting the security worker outside Kapones Sports Tavern after the worker had escorted him outside for punching a 47-year-old female bar patron in the neck.

Dunson was arraigned Monday afternoon by Judge Mark Fratarcangeli in 40th District Court in St. Clair Shores on charges of attempted murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and two counts of assault and battery. The attempted murder charge is punishable by up to life in prison.

He is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

St. Clair Shores police said the incident occurred about 1:24 a.m. when Dunson pulled out a gun and shot the worker in the lower part of his body. Dunson attempted to flee on foot and fired several more shots but was apprehended by a bar patron, police said. When officers arrived at the Harper Avenue nightspot, patrons had surrounded Dunson in the parking lot. Dunson was taken into custody after he resisted arrest, police said, although he was not charged with that offense.

The employees was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Kapone’s has been the site of two incidents in which bar patrons were punched and killed, one inside and one outside the bar.

Shawn Kubic, 47, of St. Clair Shores, died last December five days after he was punched by Hatum Akrawi, 33, of Fraser, inside the bar. Akrawi was originally charged with seconddegree murdeer and manslaughter, but Fratarcangeli recently dismissed the murder charge, although Macomb County Circuti Judge Carl Marlinga has discussed the possibility of reinstating the murder charge.

A hearing on whether Marlinga should be recused from the case is scheduled for next Monday in front of Chief Circuit Court Judge James Biernat Jr.

A second man, Johnny Zan Rittenberry of Warren, is accused of pouring a drink on Kubic as he lay on the floor. Rittenberry was charged with assault and battery, a misdemeanor.

The case is pending in 40th District Court. In May 2018, Andrew Werling, 35, allegedly punched Eric Hysell, 56, outside the bar’s rear entrance.

Hysell died three days after the incident. A jury trial is scheduled for Jan. 13 in front of Judge Julie Gatti in circuit court.

A second man, Mark Foster, 55 at the time, was convicted by plea of assault and battery in that case, pleaded no contest to disorderly person and was sentenced to one year probation.

Foster was arguing with Hysell over money owed to Hysell when Werling stepped in and punched Hysell after Foster had fallen, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact St. Clair Shores police Detective Paul Dlugokenski at 586-445-5305.
