Sheriff ‘s office warns of phone scam

- — Macomb Daily staff

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a phone scam with a caller posing as one of their detectives.

The sheriff’s office said it has taken multiple reports of residents receiving scam phone calls for various reasons. The caller is reported to be a male stating he is Detective Holmes from the sheriff ’s office. The call has been coming from the phone number 586-7012325.

The caller has asked for money, stated the resident has missed jury duty, and has even told the resident to report to the sheriff’s office to speak with Detective Holmes.

In some cases, the caller has sent paperwork to the resident’s work place requesting a signature.

According to the sheriff’s office, the caller is not Detective Holmes and does not work for the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.

The phone number being used does not belong to the sheriff’s office. Any forms needed by the sheriff’s office would need to be signed in person in front of a sheriff’s office employee who would be able to provide identification.

Members of the sheriff’s office will not request money in the form of cash, gift cards, bitcoin, etc., in lieu of an arrest, sex offender registration, or jury duty.

Any monies taken for bond would be only accepted at the bond office located within the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office asks that this information is shared with friends and family, especially those who may not have social media. Anyone receiving a phone call from someone identifying themselves as a sheriff’s office employee, should contact the Sheriff’s Office front desk at 586469-5151 or in person.
