Blossom Heath Park turns into wonderland
Blossom Heath Park in St. Clair Shores has been transformed into a colorful winter wonderland for Christmas.
The six-acre park, located behind Wahby Park on Jefferson Avenue near 10 Mile Road, has been decorated with 125,000 lights and dubbed Tunnel of Lights. There are also food trucks, hot chocolate and weekend entertainment.
Henry Bowman, the city’s parks and recreation director, said the inspiration behind the display came during the summer.
“We had so much going here at the park with activities and food trucks and the farmers market,” he said. “It’s just a walkable area, people came out and enjoyed themselves. As it got colder, Mayor (Kip) Walby said ‘ Keep it going.’”
As luck would have it, Brent Skurda, a former Warren resident who was part of the holiday decorations on Eiffel Street in Warren, had moved to St. Clair Shores. He donated his time and helped with the park’s design.
The TIFA (Tax Increment Finance Authority) board and Clinton Townshipbased Landscape Services and worked on the project, according to Bowman.
“People were floored by how it looks,” he said, adding the event will become an annual one. “That park has gone from being almost totally unused to one of the most-used parks in metro Detroit.”
The Christmas Treat hot chocolate stand is there every night for a quick warmup.
Tonight, there will be the Lil’ Bros Burgers food truck. On Friday, food trucks from Senors, BBQ Daddy, and Che Cosa Coffee, along with The Christmas Show with Jeff Cavatio. For Saturday, food trucks include Island Noodle, BBQ Daddy, The Little Donut Factory, and a local choir.
The event runs 5-9 p.m. nightly through Christmas. It is free, but there is a charge for the food.
