Over 2,200 new confirmed cases of coronaviru­s per day were averaged on Sunday and Monday in Michigan, according to the state’s website.

There were 4,551 cases and 71 deaths due to the virus, which were re - ported over the two-day period, averaging 2,275 cases added per day in the state.

In to - tal, 463,403 cases and 11,532 deaths have been seen in the state.

These counts exclude probable cases and deaths linked to COVID-19 and include only confirmed cases and deaths.

Health officials have also been tracking results of statewide testing. So far, 7,871,299 diagnostic tests have been conducted.

As of Friday, a total of 284,731 Michigande­rs have recovered from COVID-19 (30 days out from onset of illness), a statistic which is updated by the state every Saturday.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the number of cases reached over 77.2 million with deaths at over 1.6 million worldwide on Saturday.

In the United States, nearly 18 million cases have been reported, with nearly 319,000 deaths tied to the disease.

Michigan ranks as the eighth state in the U.S. with the most total number of deaths. New York is first.

The state is also tenth in the the nation in cases, Johns Hopkins says, with California as first.

On Monday, Joe Biden received his first dose of the coronaviru­s vaccine on live television as part of a growing effort to convince the American public the inoculatio­ns are safe, taking the Pfizer vaccine at a hospital not far from his home in Delaware, according to The Associated Press (see story below).

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and her husband are expected to receive their first shots next week.

Dr. Joneigh Khaldun was administer­ed her vaccine on Friday.

“#IGotTheSho­t so I can continue to work in the ER and can protect my colleagues, family and community. And I will continue to #WearAMask, wash my hands, and socially distance so we can end this pandemic in Michigan,” she tweeted afterwards.

In an effort to give back over the holidays, Governor Gretchen W hit mer launched her “12 Days of Givemas” campaign on T witter. For Day 7 on Monday, Whitmer tweeted a photo of her buying Christmas gifts from local businesses, likely to encourage support for those affected by the pandemic.

In the Detroit area on Monday, Wayne County had the most new cases with 569, for a total of 51,495 cases. There were also 5 new deaths, making 1,670 total in the county.

Oakland County was next with 435 new cases and 2 new deaths, totaling 51,482 cases and 1,481 deaths total.

Macomb County had 358 new cases and 4 new deaths, which totals 45,489 cases and 1,449 deaths cumulative­ly.

In the city of Detroit itself, 248 new cases were added, totaling 24,636. No new deaths were reported, keeping the total number of deaths in the city at 1,663.

In mid-Michigan, in Isabella County, there were 39 new cases and 1 new death, totaling 2,905 cases and 37 deaths.

Gratiot County saw 35 new cases, making 2,131 total, and no new deaths, meaning the number of deaths stayed at 58.

Clare County also had 17 new cases and 2 new deaths, cumulative­ly making 1,015 cases and 32 deaths.

The Michigan Department of Correction­s (MDOC) reported 98 new cases and 2 new deaths, putting it at 18,816 cases and 113 deaths total.

Kent County also had 345 new cases, making 39,249 total, and no new deaths, keeping it at 472.
