State adds 7,300 new cases over three-day span

Michigan reported 7,341 new cases of COVID-19 over the three-day span of Thursday, Dec. 24 through Saturday, Dec. 26. New cases were not reported Thursday or Friday due to the holidays.

This brings the state’s total numbers to over 477,000 since the onset of the pandemic, and 12,029 COVID-19 deaths.

The numbers indicate an average of 2,447 cases per day, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. This figure indicates a decline in cases from Tuesday and Wednesday’s numbers.

Additional­ly, 254 deaths were reported across the three days. Of those, 188 were reported during a Vital Records review.

Wayne County, excluding Detroit, reported 822 new coronaviru­s cases and 22 new deaths. Within Detroit city limits, 300 cases and 11 deaths were reported.

Oakland County saw 687

cases and 32 new deaths, while neighborin­g Macomb County reported 579 cases and 29 new deaths over three days.

Kent County was another hotspot with 507 cases and 13 deaths, while Genesee County reported 303 cases and 11 deaths.

The Michigan Department of Correction­s saw another marked increase, with 424 new cases and 5 deaths.

In mid-Michigan, Isabella County reported 48 new cases, an average of 16 per day. Additional­ly 2 deaths were reported. Gratiot County reported 18 cases and 4 deaths. Clare County reported 15 cases, with no deaths reported across the holidays.

Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget McCormack has requested judges and court staff be included in the next round of vaccines.

According to the Associated Press, judges, The U.S. Department of Homeland Security considers those within the legal system to be “essential critical infrastruc­ture workers.”
