DOs Making a Difference History
McLaren Macomb Medical Center originated as Mount Clemens General Hospital in 1944 when 12 osteopathic physicians (DOs) and community leaders came together to organize and establish a hospital suitable for labor and delivery as well as surgery. The physicians used their own money and appealed to the community to raise the necessary funds to renovate a building on Macomb Street in Mount Clemens.
On February 10, 1945 Mount Clemens General Hospital (MCGH) officially opened with 40 beds and a staff of 17 physicians. During its first year of operation 360 babies were delivered and 600 surgeries were performed. Over the ensuing years the hospital continued to grow moving to its current site at 1000 Harrington St. in 1955 and eventually reaching its current size of 288 beds in 1976.
In 1989 MCGH consolidated its cardiovascular services by opening the Mat Gaberty Heart Center. Cancer services were consolidated in 2008 with the opening of
Ted Wahby Cancer Center which is now part of the Karmanos Cancer Institute. McLaren Macomb became the first ACS verified trauma center in Macomb County in 2010 and opened theWebber Emergency and Trauma Center this past summer.
Mount Clemens General Hospital was initially an osteopathic hospital, one of many in the Metro Detroit area. In 2006 the hospital became the wholly owned subsidiary of McLaren Health Care changing its name to McLaren Macomb in 2012.
Over the past 75 years, the hospital’s medical staff has grown to over 500 doctors including osteopathic physicians (D.O.), allopathic physicians (M.D.), oral surgeons (D.D.S.) and podiatrists (D.P.M.).
