That’s right, the opening weekend of the NFL postseason coincides with the resumption of the prep tournament as teams at every level continue to navigate this COVID-impacted season.
Four Macomb County teams are scheduled to appear in three games with regional championships at stake.
In Division 1, Romeo is at West Bloomfield at 1 p.m.
In Division 2, De La Salle Collegiate is at Warren-Mott at noon.
In Division 6, Clinton is at Michigan Collegiate at 5 p.m. Who’ve ya got?
Romeo (5- 4) is trying to win a regional championship for the first time since 2016. West Bloomfield (8-1) is looking for its first regional title since 2017.
De La Salle (5- 4) won state championships in 2018 and 2017. Warren-Mott has never won a regional.
Michigan Collegiate (9- 0) is seeking its first regional title since 2017, and Clinton (8-1) its first since 2015.
If the Michigan High School Athletic Association schedule goes as planned, the playoffs will culminate with state finals on Jan. 22 and 23.
Semifinals are slated for Jan. 16.
No player or coach involved could be faulted for crossing fingers or rubbing a rabbit’s foot for good luck.
The coronavirus-delayed sea
son was supposed to end with championship games the first weekend in December.
However, a shutdown in mid-November forced the MHSAA to audible to a Jan. 2 restart of the tournament.
But that plan was scrapped after confusion over a rapid-testing program offered to the MHSAA by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
The winner of the Romeo-West Bloomfield game plays either Belleville or Detroit Cass Tech.
The winner of the DLS-Mott game plays either Oak Park or Livonia Churchill.
The winner of the MCClinton game plays either Constantine or Michigan Center.
