Man held in northern Macomb shooting
A St. Clair County man is hospitalized after being shot in the leg Wednesday on Main Street in the northern Macomb-St. Clair County border town of Memphis, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim, a 57-yearold Ft. Gratiot Township man, had encountered the man outside of a building and apparently had a dispute with him. The suspect took out a gun and fired at him, striking the victim in the leg, said sheriff’s Sgt. Renee Yax
The alleged shooter then walked into the Memphis Police Department and told officers that he had shot a man.
“The suspect walked over to the police department and basically turned himself in,” Yax said.
The Memphis Police Department is located on Union Street, about a block away from the shooting scene on Main Street at Bordman Road.
According to the sheriff’s office, officials there received a request from Memphis police to assist with a shooting that had just taken place.
The 57-year-old suspect and the victim apparently knew each other, but detectives were still trying to determine a motive on Wednesday night. Yax said it was not related to St. Patrick’s Day revelry.
Bleeding from his gunshot wound, the shooting victim limped into a nearby business, where a worker called 911. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
Police said the suspect, who investigators described as cooperative, was taken to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office and is being held in the county jail.
Once the investigation is complete, investigators will present their case to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s with a request for a warrant charging the suspect assault with intent to commit murder. The suspect is expected to be arraigned Thursday or Friday.
Roughly one half of the 1,180-resident community is located in northern Macomb and the other half is in St. Clair County. Yax said the sheriff’s office will handle the case in its entirety.
