MSU Extension announces Smart Money essay contests
What is the difference between an investment and savings?
What would be a good investment for you?
These are the kind of questions students will be asked to consider in this year’s Smart Money Contests hosted by Michigan State University Extension 4-H Youth Development during April’s National Financial Literacy Month.
Michigan youth can win cash by competing in the online Cash Composition Contest (ages 9-13) or the Show Your Money Smarts Contest (ages 14-19).
Through a sponsorship from Michigan Education Savings Program (MESP) and Michigan Education Trust (MET), first place winners can choose $1,000 towards an MESP and/or MET 529 or take the lower $400 cash prize amount.
The ten winners of these contests can also serve as this year’s Money Smart Youth Ambassadors. In this role, they will have opportunities to share their financial knowledge with others across the state and gain leadership skills.
“These Smart Money Contests are not only a great opportunity for Michigan youth to win money, but also a fun way to learn about financial topics,” said Kathy Jamieson, Macomb County MSU Extension educator. “We encourage all youth residing in Michigan who are between the ages of 9-19 to participate in the Cash Composition Contest or the Show Your Money Smarts Contest.”
The contests will take place this April and will be entirely online.
Entry and submission for the Cash Composition Contest must be completed by April 5.
Show Your Money Smart Contest entry and submission must be completed by April 23.
