SMART Flex a new kind of transit service
For some needing more transportation options, a new on-demand transit service offered by the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation may fit their needs.
SMART, in partnership with Via, a TransitTech firm, is offering the service, called SMART Flex.
On Wednesday, officials rolled out the service at events in Troy, Dearborn and in Clinton Township, where they touted the Hall
Road corridor from Utica to New Baltimore.
In addition to Hall Road, the service will link to Van Dyke Avenue and 23 Mile Road and destinations such as the Verkuilen Building and MCC Center Campus/UC Center in Clinton Township, Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights, Meijer in Chesterfield Township and Jimmy John’s Field in Utica.
The transit trips start at $2 with a maximum price of $8 depending on distance and are available seven days a week from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. A vehicle can be arranged by calling 734-212-8429 or using the SMART Flex mobile app on their smartphone.
Riders and vehicles are matched up in real time and riders will be directed to a nearby virtual bus stop for pick up and drop off. For those with limited mobility, door-to-door service will be offered.
For those already utilizing SMART fixed route service who wish to combine a trip with SMART Flex, the first $2 of the trip will be included as part of the fixed route total fare. SMART/ DART passes are valid, but SMART Value passes are not accepted.
