New coronavirus cases in Michigan again spiked to over 8,000 new cases on Wednesday, mirroring the previous week’s high case counts, according to the state’s website.

There were 8,015 new cases and 30 new deaths, bringing Michigan’s totals to 715,478 cases and 16,327 deaths since the start of the pandemic last March.

The last time over 8,000 new cases were reported was last Saturday, when 8,413 new cases and 57 new deaths were quoted by the state.

But the state health department also announced high new case counts all last week, including 5,498 new cases on Friday, 6,036 new cases on Thursday, 6,311 new cases on Wednesday and 5,177 on Tuesday.

8,202 new cases were also reported last Monday, which was a two-day total for March 28 and 29, averaging about 4,101 cases per day.

This Monday, April 5, the two-day total was 10,293 cases, roughly 5,146 cases per day.

And, on Tuesday, April 6, there were 4,964 new cases and 58 new deaths reported by the state.

These counts exclude probable cases and deaths linked to COVID-19 and include only confirmed cases and deaths.

Also on Tuesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who is 49-years-old, was vaccinated alongside her 19-yearold daughter, Sherry, and other teens a day after vaccine eligibility expanded to everyone ages 16 and older in Michigan.

The number of cases have been spiking higher in more populated areas of the state, especially in Southeast Michigan, even as more and more people acquire vaccines against the deadly virus.

Whitmer is blaming the high rates on pandemic fatigue, noncompliance with safety rules and residents’ increased movement and more contagious variants, according to The Associated Press.

Health officials have also been tracking results of statewide testing. So far, 11,784,622 diagnostic tests have been conducted.

As of this past Friday, a total of 577,141 Michiganders have recovered from COVID-19 (30 days out from onset of illness), a total which is updated by the state every Saturday.

According to Michigan’s website, at least 37.7 percent of the state’s population had been vaccinated as of Wednesday, or 3,054,258 residents.

Macomb County had 234,988 residents vaccinated, Oakland had 433,023 and Wayne had 350,471.

There were also 4,710,886 vaccine doses administered, in total, in the state as of Wednesday.

Pfizer vaccines make up 2,557,057 of that total, Moderna vaccines account for 2,187,713 and Johnson and Johnson vaccines are about 126,965.

In Oakland County, 650,706 vaccine doses have been administered, in Macomb County, 377,345 and in Wayne County, 530,090.

The state recently added a coronavirus vaccine section to its webpage, explaining the coronavirus vaccine and displaying a dashboard to give an overview on vaccine distribution in Michigan.
