A Clinton Township teen was charged Saturday with several crimes after being caught with a stolen handgun on the campus of Chippewa Valley High School earlier this week, according to police.

The student was arrested Friday morning at the high school after someone spotted the weapon and notified school officials. Authorities imposed a lockdown on the building on 19 Mile and Plank roads until the matter was resolved.

No motive was given as to why the student was carrying a gun on campus, or where he gained access to the stolen weapon.

Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido declined to release specific details, but said his zero-tolerance stance remains the same as it has since the numerous cases of copycats following the Nov. 30 mass shootings at Oxford High School in neighboring Oakland County.

“Is no one paying attention to what we just went through at Oxford High School?” Lucido said Saturday night. “What was this person possibly thinking?”

Prosecutors formally charged the 15-year-old student as a juvenile in a relatively rare Saturday hearing. Because of his age, no further information will be released, officials said.

The male student faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon, receiving and concealing a stolen firearm, and possession of a dangerous weapon on school grounds.

According to Clinton Township police, he was arrested Friday at the high school after someone spotted the weapon and notified school officials. Authorities imposed a lockdown on the school until the matter was resolved.

Ron Roberts, school superintendent, said administrators received reports from a parent and a student that another student was seen with a gun on school grounds. Following protocol, they immediately called police, who placed the school on lockdown as a search was conducted.

Police quickly located the juvenile along with a gun. The teen was ordered to be held in custody of the Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center.

“The school resource officer and CVHS staff acted swiftly and appropriately to bring this situation to a peaceful conclusion,” police Lt. Christian Madajczyk said in a news release.
