I-94 exit ramp preps for five-month rebuild closure
Shutdown scheduled to start 7 a.m. Friday
The rebuild of Gratiot Avenue (M-3) through Roseville will soon add to the congestion of an already busy area of the city.
State transportation officials on Tuesday said the eastbound Interstate 94 exit ramp to northbound Gratiot near 13 Mile Road will be closed starting Friday. It is expected to be shut down through September.
That’s to allow work crews to rebuild the ramp roadway, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
When MDOT officials announced the Gratiot rebuild, the shutdown of an I-94 ramp received little publicity.
But, “the planned closure of eastbound 94 to M3 has been in the works all along,” MDOT spokesperson Diane Cross said in an email Tuesday.
The ramp is scheduled to close at 7 a.m. Friday. Traffic will be detoured further east to the I-94 exit ramp to Little Mack Avenue.
The Little Mack-13 Mile area is home to a Meijer store, a Kroger grocery store, other shopping outlets, gas stations and restaurants making it one of the busiest sections of the area in terms of traffic.
On Thursday, MDOT plans to close the westbound I-94 entrance ramp at southbound Gratiot as part of the project. It is scheduled to reopen Tuesday, April 12.
The road work is part of MDOT’s two-year, $65 million, 1.7-miles rebuild project to repair Gratiot from 11 Mile to 14 Mile roads in Roseville.
Work includes replacing the asphalt roadway, water main and storm sewer work, sign replacement, and signal modernization, along with ramp and sidewalks to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
