Jimmy Milkey III’s first start gave De La Salle Collegiate some relief.

The senior right-hander pitched four scoreless innings and Adam Broski hit a home run Monday to spark the visiting Pilots to an 11-0 victory over Stevenson in a non-league baseball game.

Milkey left with the Pilots leading 9-0 in their first game since losing a Catholic League doubleheader to Brother Rice on Sunday.

“I saw senior leadership,” coach John Musachio said when asked about Milkey’s performance. “He was ready to go. He threw a lot of strikes. He gave us some zeroes early on, and that’s what we needed. He did a heck of a job today.”

Broski’s two-run home run gave the Pilots a 3-0 lead and highlighted a five-run second inning.

“I’m most proud of the way the guys came out with energy and focus,” Musachio said. “We had a tough day yesterday in league play. We talked all preseason about having the ability to bounce back and play day to day, and they did that today against a real good program.”

Milkey appreciated having the lead when he went to the mound for the second inning of Stevenson’s season opener.

“Can’t do anything on the mound without my team,” Milkey said.

Milkey, making his initial start of the season, retired the side in order in the fourth.

“I felt great,” Milkey said. “My curveball was working.”

Broski, the Pilots’ catcher, said Milkey got stronger as his pitch count grew.

“As the game went on, his curveball started to move better, and his fastball had a little tail on it,” Broski said. “He placed his pitches well today.”

Broski got a curveball on the first pitch of his at bat in the second, and the junior expected — and received — the same kind of pitch on the second offering.

“He hung it, and I hit it to right field,” Broski said.

It was Broski’s first home run of the season.

“I’m more of a gap to gap, singles hitter,” he said.

De La Salle scored four runs with the help of one hit, five walks and a hit batter in the fourth.

Hayden Boudreau, Rhett Roeser and Amir Mitchell each drew a bases-loaded walk. Matt Bartoy’s single drove in a run.

Roeser’s RBI single in the sixth put De La Salle ahead 10-0, and Broski’s hit drove home the final run of the six-inning game.

“Too many swings and misses on offense and too many easy bases (allowed),” said Stevenson coach Joe Emanuele of the Titans’ day.

“It’s early. That’s the kind of thing that’s going to happen. They’re a good team. They put the ball in play and did a nice job with two strikes. That’s why they deserved to win today. You give a good team a bunch of bases, they’re going to beat you pretty good.”

Stevenson played Anchor Bay on Tuesday.
