Student struck by vehicle while walking to school
Driver immediately stopped, cooperating with investigators
A Roseville Middle School student remains hospitalized with severe injuries after she was struck by a passing motorist Tuesday morning, according to police and school officials.
The 12-year-old female student, whose name has not been released, was walking to classes about 7:20 a.m. when the crash occurred at the corner of Martin Road and Barkman Street.
Police Chief Ryan Monroe said the 21-year-old male driver from Detroit was heading east on Martin when he struck the child, who was walking to the school on Barkman. The driver immediately stopped at the crash scene and is cooperating with investigators, the chief said.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, police said.
“We’re still investigating,” Monroe said. “Witnesses said he did not appear to be speeding. He consented to a PBT (portable breathalyzer test), and we know he hadn’t been drinking.”
The driver has been released pending further investigation, police said.
The student was transported to Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit, where she underwent surgery.
Mark Blaszkowski, superintendent of Roseville Community Schools, police and school officials have been in touch with the girl’s family.
“Obviously, we are devastated at such a tragedy where a kid walking to school was hit by a car,” Blaszkowski said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the student and her family. We’re hoping for the best.”
He said the district’s crisis team was available at the school and will also be on hand Wednesday for any student or staff member who may need some support.
“Some of our staff may have seen this coming into school for the morning,” he said.
Roseville police “would like to remind all motorists to be cognizant of our school children walking to school,” the department said in a statement.
The incident happened around the same time police were responding to a crash scene that involved one man armed with a knife who was shot to death by police.
