Extra police called after bar shooting
A dispute over a woman resulted in two men being shot over the weekend in an Eastpointe bar, according to police.
The incident sparked an uproar among customers at Ray’s Boom Boom Room on Gratiot Avenue, near the intersection of Toepfer Road, as additional manpower had to be called in from neighboring departments.
Eastpointe Public Safety Director George Rouhib said police were dispatched around midnight or 1 a.m. Sunday to the bar for a report of a double shooting.
“Apparently, there was an argument over a woman and one of the patrons pushed another,” Rouhib said. “That’s when an unidentified man pulled out a gun and shot the two people.”
One victim was struck by gunfire to the groin area, while the second was hit in the buttocks, police said. They were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
In the meantime, people inside of the bar became unruly, so Eastpointe officers called in police from Roseville and St. Clair Shores to assist with crowd control. Eastpointe firefighters and Medstar Ambulance technicians were able to move in and render aid.
No arrests were reported.
“Some people were upset, others were obviously intoxicated, so we needed some assistance to make sure the crowd had been contained,” the director said.
Investigators said witnesses were uncooperative with police. The shooter was able to escape during the commotion.
“We had to seize the DVR from the club, hoping it captured the shooting,” Rouhib said, adding the incident is still being actively investigated.
A description of the gunman was not immediately available.
No one from Ray’s Boom Boom Room was available to speak to the media, a maintenance person said Sunday afternoon.
The club has a sign in the entranceway that indicates the bar is open only to people ages 30 and up.
