Gregg and Sharon Monbleau understand that the needs of the homeless and low-income residents extend beyond food.

Personal hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, toilet paper, feminine hygiene items and toothpaste are often difficult for people to afford — especially since the Michigan Bridge Card can’t be used for those items. In 2015, the Monbleaus established the Blessing Bags Brigade to help supply the homeless, veterans, students, seniors and low-income residents with hygiene products that are essential to maintaining health and well being,

This week, the Blessing Bags Brigade added a new blessing box in Mount Clemens on the corner of Pine and New streets behind St. Peter Catholic Church. Church member Sharon

Bronson will be in charge of making sure the box is stocked with hygiene bags as well as socks, gloves and hats in the winter months.

“We thought it was a good location because people walk by here to go to the parking lot across the street and because the church is going to be starting a soup kitchen next month so many of the people who would come to the soup kitchen might need hygiene products or warm gloves,” said Sharon Monbleau.

Gregg Monbleau said the goal is to have a sponsor adopt the box and help to provide items for it.

St. Peter Stewardship Director Debra Goff-Liegghio said the hygiene blessing box helps the community and pairs perfectly with the church’s soup kitchen which is set to open Jan. 10.

“People will be able to come in and warm up and have soup and bread,” said Goff-Liegghio. “We will have coats and hats and things available for people as well.”
