In a press release issued Feb. 1, Warren Mayor James Fouts announced he officially filed to run for reelection on Jan. 30.

Fouts had a kickoff event for his campaign Jan. 25 at Andiamo Italia Banquet Center, but had not officially filed to run for mayor at that time.

Warren Council President Patrick Green, Councilman Ron Papandrea, Macomb County Commissioner Michelle Nard, and Rep. Lori Stone have all officially filed to run for mayor in Warren.

“I am very optimistic about the future of our city and feel strongly that despite the setbacks by the current council, Warren does have a great future,” Fouts said in the release.

Fouts said he is running for mayor to see various projects accomplished including a skateboard park near Mound and Chicago roads; improvements to technology and infrastructure, and a proposed towne center mixed use development on Van Dyke Avenue north of 12 Mile Road. He also touted

“I want to unite the divergent members of our city, both Democrat and Republican, to work together to make our city a better place to be,” Fouts said.

He added the focus of the election should be fighting for the priorities of Warren taxpayers.

Fouts has served as mayor of Michigan’s third largest city since 2007 and is currently in his fourth mayoral term.

In 2016, Warren voters approved a charter amendment to allow the office of mayor to serve five 4-year terms or 20 years instead of three 4-year terms or 12 years. In 2020, a charter amendment reducing the number of terms that can be served by the mayor back to three 4-year terms was approved.
