Man to stand trial on gun charges
A 35-year-old Clinton Township man was bound over to Macomb County Circuit Court Wednesday in connection with a 2022 Thanksgiving Day shooting.
Michael Kamal Sinnawi is charged with carrying a concealed weapon and felon in possession of a firearm, both 5-year felonies; and felony firearm, a 2-year felony.
Warren 37th District Court Judge Michael Chmura reduced Sinnawi’s bond to $300,000 cash/ surety despite objections by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.
Initially, Sinnawi was also charged with assault with intent to murder, a life felony and discharge of a firearm from a vehicle causing injury, a 15-year felony; at that time his bond was set at $1 million cash/ surety.
The criminal charges relating to the shooting were dismissed on Jan. 31 after four civilian witnesses did not show up to court for Sinnawi’s preliminary examination.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office continued to pursue the case and last month reissued charges as part of Prosecutor Peter Lucido’s gun crimes crackdown.
In the Thanksgiving Day shooting, Sinnawi allegedly drove up to a residence in the area of 12 Mile and Schoenherr roads, where he was supposed to meet the victim for a fight, before firing five shots at him, according to Macomb prosecutors. The victim, who was seated in the passenger seat in a vehicle, was wounded.
