A 40-year-old man who was allegedly driving the wrong way on Interstate 696 in Roseville early Friday morning has been charged with murder for causing the crash that killed a 62-year-old man.

Stephano Nabors of Jackson, Mich., was arraigned Monday in front of Judge Alyia Hakim in 39th District Court in Roseville on charges of second-degree murder, punishable by up to life in prison, and four 15-year felonies: operating a vehicle while Intoxicated causing death, reckless driving causing death, driving while license suspended causing death and fleeing and eluding police causing death, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police were notified of Nabors driving a Jeep Liberty eastbound I-696 in the westbound lanes at Coolidge about 3:30 a.m. Friday, according to prosecutors. The Liberty struck a vehicle at Couzens, causing the other vehicle to roll over, prosecutors said. When a Michigan State Police patrol car entered at Groesbeck Highway, Nabors’ vehicle nearly struck the car, they said. Nabors continued driving and struck a Chevy SUV, killing the 62-year-old driver, Steven Vannorstrand, 62, of Harper Woods, whose family said he was on his way to work at General Motors, according to WXYZ-TV (Channel 7).

“Thank you to the Michigan State Police for risking their lives to stop this driver,” county Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a news release. “The defendant’s reckless decision to get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol resulted in a tragic and senseless loss of life. Driving the wrong way on I-696 demonstrated a complete disregard for the safety of others on the road. We will vigorously pursue justice for the victim and his family.”

Nabors was being held in lieu of a $1 million bond and is scheduled for a May 17 probable-cause hearing and May 24 preliminary examination.

Vannorstrand was a longtime GM employee, played guitar and was a father of four children and grandfather of seven.
