Off-duty Detroit officer arrested for alleged DUI
An off-duty officer from the Detroit Police Department has been suspended and faces criminal charges after being arrested in Clinton Township for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The incident took place following a traffic crash on Sunday in Clinton Township, Capt. Anthony Coppola said in a news release.
According to the release, officers determined one of the drivers involved in the crash “had been doing so under the influence of intoxicants” and was arrested.
“During the investigation, the vehicle operator found to be intoxicated verbalized employment as an officer of the Detroit Police Department,” Coppola said Wednesday in the release.
All of the people involved in the incident cooperated fully with the investigation, police said in the release.
The township police department would not say where or what time of day the crash took place, or if there were any injuries involved.
Coppola said the investigation is closed, but no other information would be released at this time.
The Detroit Police Department issued a statement confirming the arrest.
“These alleged actions are disappointing,” Cpl. Dan Donakowski said in the release. “There is a high standard of conduct that all Detroit Police officers have sworn to uphold. Under no circumstances will the DPD condone acts of drunk driving by any of its members.
Donakowski said the matter has been turned over to the Internal Affairs for investigation, as per DPD policy.
The officer has been placed in an administrative duty status pending further action by Internal Affairs. That means the officer is not allowed to carry a weapon, police said.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office has not received a warrant for the subject’s arrest, according to a spokesman. It was unknown if police were going to charge the officer with an ordinance violation, which would be handled by township prosecutor Charles Towner.
