Program introduces students to the basics of engineering
Lakeview High School’s CTE Engineering program can prepare students for a possible future career in desired fields such as computer engineering or electrical engineering. Members of the program experience multiple hands-on projects to acquire knowledge about the engineering world prior to actually entering it.
“Their current project includes designing a model car, which will participate in a race and car show around early May. Students also have been creating new concepts of what to include in Lakeview’s courtyard, which consists of empty space and some picnic tables,” said Engineering Instructor Jolaine Price.
One particular student, Andrew Medvedik, ‘24 has been in the engineering
program since his sophomore year.
He currently takes Advanced Engineering, where he uses time to focus on projects for the upcoming spring semester, which entails his model car and creating personal requests from teachers (using 3-D printing to create models, school equipment, and instructional
“Usually, I create parts from drawings or other items that teachers around the school request. It definitely helps me prepare for the model car I’m making for my project this semester and any other future projects,” said Medvedik.
Even if a student is not entirely sure about entering the engineering field, it is still beneficial to understand the principles of engineering. Learning just the basics can open up different career paths.
Medvedik stated, “This program showed me the basic functions of engineering, and now I understand more about how and why things are created. It opened up many more career options I didn’t even know existed.”
