Sheriff’s officials: Man led police on high-speed, wrong-way chase with children in vehicle

-

A 29-year-old Chesterfield Township man led Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase Thursday morning in a stolen vehicle also occupied by two young children.

Devante Everette was arraigned Friday by Magistrate Ryan Zemke in 41B District Court in Clinton Township on charges of fleeing eluding police, two counts of second-degree child abuse and receiving and concealing a stolen motor vehicle for the incident that traversed Clinton Township and Harrison Township. The most serious charge, second-degre child abuse, is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The incident began minutes after 9 a.m. when officers were alerted to a stolen silver Jeep Grand Cherokee by a street security camera system with license-plate reading capabilities and attempted to pull over the vehicle on East

Price Drive near Metropolitan Parkway and Gratiot Avenue, according to a news release from the county Sheriff’s Office.

The driver fled and traveled east on Price, which turns into King Drive, then went through a red traffic signal to enter southbound

Harper Avenue, the release said. On Harper, Everette allegedly drove in the left turn signal and into oncoming traffic. The vehicle entered westbound I-94 from south of 15 Mile Road, and Everette evaded an attempt by deputies to box in the Grand Cherokee. Everette then allegedly performed a U-turn and went east in the westbound lanes, according to police.

“The suspect unpredictably crisscrossed three lanes of oncoming traffic multiple times, disregarding the safety of every individual on the crowded freeway,” officials said.

Deputies attempted different law enforcement pursuit tactics to stop the vehicle, eventually stopping the vehicle on I-94 near Shook Road in Harrison Township, according to authorities, who were surprised to discover a 3-yearold child and an infant in the back seat. The children were taken to a nearby hospital, medically cleared, and released to a family member.

One deputy sustained a minor injury; no other injuries were reported. Three MCSO patrol vehicles were damaged.

A $10,000 bond was set for Everette. The court web site did not indicate Friday the next court date.
